RETHYMNON
OLD TOWN
The old town of Rethymnon is a preserved Renaissance city, which bears elements from both the Venetian and Ottoman periods. In the old town there are the street markets.
It offers many sights and numerous possibilities. During the day you can swim here on the wonderfully long and fine sandy beach and in the evening you can simply enjoy life in the many alleys, cafés and taverns in the city centre.
VENETIAN FORTEZZA
The Fortezza dominates the Palekastro hill next to the old town of Rethymnon and is one of the largest fortresses of the Venetian era. It was built on the site of the citadel of the ancient Rithimna and the temple of Artemis Rokkea. The large pentagonal fortress dates back to 1573 and its perimeter is 1300 m long. There are four bastions on the walls.
On your sightseeing tour through Rethymno, the old Venetian port should not be missed. Here you will find small yachts and fishing boats that sell their catches to the numerous fish restaurants in the harbour. So if you like fish, this is the right place.
